MSI Announces GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM X Classic—Reuses RTX 30-series SUPRIM X Cooler

MSI quietly rolled out the GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM X Classic. Positioned alongside its air-cooled flagship graphics card, the RTX 4090 SUPRIM X, the new SUPRIM X Classic appears to be reusing the older version of MSI's SUPRIM X cooling solution that the company shipped with RTX 30-series "Ampere" graphics cards, such as the RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X. The older cooler should capable of handling the thermal loads of the RTX 4090, as it has much lower power-draw than the RTX 3090 Ti. This isn't the only "Classic" graphics card from MSI, with the company planning Radeon RX 7900 series Gaming X Classic graphics cards that reuse the Tri Frozr III cooling solution that the company used with its RX 6900 series Gaming X products. Besides the cooler and product-design there don't appear to be any other difference in specs for the SUPRIM X Classic compared to the RTX 4090 SUPRIM X.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti to Launch $100 Cheaper Than RTX 4080 12 GB

A leaked NVIDIA company slide confirms that the upcoming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti graphics card will launch at a starting price of USD $799. This would put it $100 cheaper than what was going to be the launch price of the RTX 4080 12 GB. NVIDIA cancelled the launch of the RTX 4080 12 GB, and reportedly re-branded it to the RTX 4070 Ti. The RTX 4080 12 GB was supposed to launch alongside the RTX 4080 16 GB in mid-November 2022, but the company decided to "unlaunch" it, in the wake of bad press on the confusing and deceptive naming of the SKU, and its ambitious MSRP that would have put custom-design cards well above the $1,000-mark.

The NVIDIA slide goes on to claim that the RTX 4070 Ti will be faster than the previous-generation flagship, the RTX 3090 Ti. This is thanks to its 40 shader TFLOP/s, 93 RT TFLOP/s, and 642 Tensor TFLOP/s. The RTX 4070 Ti is expected to debut the new 4 nm "AD104" silicon, featuring 7,680 CUDA cores, 60 RT cores, 240 Tensor cores, 240 TMUs, and 80 ROPs. The card features 12 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory across a rather narrow 192-bit memory bus. The slide confirms that January 5, 2023 will be the market availability date for the RTX 4070 Ti. NVIDIA's decision to price the RTX 4070 Ti at $799 may have been influenced by the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT priced at $899.

NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti Allegedly 5% Faster Than RTX 3090 Ti in OctaneBench

The upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti graphics cards is allegedly 5% faster than the previous-generation flagship, RTX 3090 Ti, according to leaked OctaneBench numbers. The online submission database of the benchmark has an entry for the RTX 4070 Ti, which is shown scoring 725 points, compared to 688 of the RTX 3090 Ti, and 928 of the RTX 4080. These would put the RTX 4070 Ti at roughly 5% faster than the RTX 3090 Ti, and about 21% slower than the RTX 4080. You begin to see why it would have been a terrible idea to market the RTX 4070 Ti as the "RTX 4080 12 GB," and why the outrage was justified—which will only bear fruit if NVIDIA prices the RTX 4070 Ti lower than the $900 MSRP it had planned for the RTX 4080 12 GB.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Performance Claims Extrapolated, Performs Within Striking Distance of RTX 4090

AMD on Thursday launched the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT RDNA3 graphics cards. With these, the company claims to have repeated its feat of a 50+ percent performance/Watt gain over the previous-generation, which propelled the RX 6000-series to competitiveness with NVIDIA's fastest RTX 30-series SKUs. AMD's performance claims for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX put the card at anywhere between 50% to 70% faster than the company's current flagship, the RX 6950 XT, when tested at 4K UHD resolution. Digging through these claims, and piecing together relevant information from the Endnotes, HXL was able to draw an extrapolated performance comparison between the RX 7900 XTX, the real-world tested RTX 4090, and previous-generation flagships RTX 3090 Ti and RX 6950 XT.

The graphs put the Radeon RX 7900 XTX menacingly close to the GeForce RTX 4090. In Watch_Dogs Legion, the RTX 4090 is 6.4% faster than the RX 7900 XTX. Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus see the two cards evenly matched, with a delta under 1%. The RTX 4090 is 4.4% faster with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022). Accounting for the pinch of salt usually associated with launch-date first-party performance claims; the RX 7900 XTX would end up within 5-10% of the RTX 4090, but pricing changes everything. The RTX 4090 is a $1,599 (MSRP) card, whereas the RX 7900 XTX is $999. Assuming the upcoming RTX 4080 (16 GB) is around 10% slower than the RTX 4090; the main clash for this generation will be between the RTX 4080 and RX 7900 XTX. Even here, AMD gets ahead with pricing, as the RTX 4080 was announced with an MSRP of $1,199 (exactly 20% pricier than the RX 7900 XTX). With the FSR 3.0 Fluid Motion announcement, AMD also blunted NVIDIA's DLSS 3 Frame Generation performance advantage.

NVIDIA to Bundle Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered with RTX 3090-series and RTX 3080-series

NVIDIA announced the "Be Greater" game bundle, where the company is handing out Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered (2022) with new purchases of GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, RTX 3090, RTX 3080 Ti, and RTX 3080 desktop graphics cards in the retail channel; as well as gaming notebooks and pre-built desktops that pack the desktop- or Laptop GPU variants of the RTX 3080-series and RTX 3090-series. The bundle appears to be available in a majority of the markets NVIDIA addresses, but will only be available through select board partners (in case of DIY retail channel graphics cards), notebook/desktop manufacturers, and through select retailers.

NVIDIA RTX 3090-series and RTX 3080-series in Free-fall: RTX 3090 Ti at $1,099; RTX 3080 Ti at $739

Prices of high-end NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series "Ampere" graphics cards appear to be in free fall as the Summer demand is beginning to wear off, and the supply chain is under pressure to pave the way for the next-generation RTX 40-series. In the worst days of the crypto-mining craze causing graphics cards shortages, the RTX 3090 Ti could be sold for as high as $3,000. It's now down to $1,099 and in stock. The RTX 3080 Ti, which was credited by reviewers as being almost as good as the RTX 3090, can be had for $739. The RTX 3090 (non-Ti) itself is now firmly under the four-figure mark, going for $959. These brand-new cards face competition from two fronts—cypto-miners dumping used graphics cards at attractive prices that gamers are willing to buy; and from AMD's aggressively-priced RX 6000-series high-end, led by the RX 6950 XT at $900.

The GeForce RTX 3090 SUPER That Never Was, Pictured

This is probably the only picture of a GeForce RTX 3090 SUPER Founders Edition graphics card. NVIDIA allegedly decided against this branding, in favor of the RTX 3090 Ti, to designate its maxed-out GA102-based graphics card. With no other "SUPER" SKUs in the RTX 30-series and plenty of "Ti," the company probably thought it wasn't worth the trouble to leave the odd SUPER SKU sticking out at the top. The picture surfaced on the NGA Forums, showing the card with prominent "RTX 3090 SUPER" branding etched along the top frame of the cooler. This card has the same device ID as the RTX 3090 Ti, so GPU-Z detects it as such. It also has identical specs to an RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition.

With the new PCIe 5.0 connector, the power supply and cable can supply up to 600 watts of power.

EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Prices Momentarily Slashed by Half, to $1149

In a sign that NVIDIA board partners are getting desperate to clear inventory of their high-end GeForce RTX 30-series "Ampere" graphics cards to make way for the next-generation, EVGA momentarily offered its premium custom-design GeForce RTX 3090 Ti FTW3 graphics card at nearly half its original price. The company listed the RTX 3090 Ti FTW3 at $1,149, a $1,000 "instant discount" from its $2,149 original list price, which is nearly $1,500 down from the card's street price before the crypto-mining crash of Q2-2022.

This could have been a one-off discount, as the other RTX 3090 Ti cards from the company's lineup are priced slightly higher, with the faster FTW3 Ultra priced at $1,199; and the FTW3 Black at $1,399. Prices of high-end graphics cards have been in free-fall for the past couple of months, with the Radeon RX 6900 XT frequently spotted under $1,000; and the RX 6950 XT oscillating around the $1,000-mark. The likes of the RTX 3080 Ti can also be had around this price; while the RTX 3080 is now firmly under $1,000, sometimes spotted near its launch price of $699.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series "AD104" Could Match RTX 3090 Ti Performance

NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 40 series Ada Lovelace graphics card lineup is slowly shaping up to be a significant performance uplift compared to the previous generation. Today, according to a well-known hardware leaker kopite7kimi, we are speculating that a mid-range AD104 SKU could match the performance of the last-generation flagship GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card. The full AD104 SKU is set to feature 7680 FP32 CUDA cores, paired with 12 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory running on a 192-bit bus. Coming with a large TGP of 400 Watts, it should have a performance of the GA102-350-A1 SKU found in GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.

Regarding naming this complete AD104 SKU, it should end up as a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti model. Of course, we must wait and see what NVIDIA decides to do with the lineup and what the final models will look like.

Intel Core i5-13600K and Core i7-13700K QS CPUs Benchmarked

Is there anything better than yet another benchmark leak of upcoming products? This time around we don't have to make do with Geekbench or some other useless benchmark, as a bilibili user in the PRC has posted a video where he has put the upcoming Intel Core i5-13600K and Core i7-13700K CPUs through 10 different games, plus 3DMark Fire Strike and Time Spy. This has been done at 1080p, 1440p and 2160p at that, using a GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card. Both CPUs are QS or Qualification Samples, which means they're going to be close to identical to retail chips, unless there are some last minute issues that are discovered. The CPUs were tested using an ASRock Z690 Steel Legends WiFi 6E motherboard, well, two actually, as both a DDR4 and a DDR5 version were used. The DDR4 RAM was running at 3600 MHz with slow-ish timings of 18-22-22 in gear 1, whereas the DDR5 memory was running at 5200 MHz, most likely at 40-40-40 timings, although the modules were rated for 6400 MHz, in both cases we're looking at 32 GB.

Courtesy of @harukaze5719, we have some much easier to read graphs than those provided by the person that tested the two CPUs, but we've included the full graphs below as well. Each CPU was compared to its current SKU equivalent from Intel and in many of the games tested, the gain was a mere percent or less to three or four percent. However, in some games—at specific resolutions—especially when paired with DDR5 memory, the performance gain was as much as 15-20 percent. A few of the games tested, such as FarCry 6 at 4K, the game ends up being GPU limited, so a faster CPU doesn't help here as you'll see in the graphs below. There are some odd results as well, where the DDR5 equipped systems saw a regression in performance, so it's hard to draw any final conclusions from this test. That said, both CPUs should offer a decent performance gain, as long as the game in question isn't GPU limited, of around five percent at 1440p when paired with DDR5 memory.

Intel i9-13900K "Raptor Lake" ES Improves Gaming Minimum Framerates by 11-27% Over i9-12900KF

Intel's 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" is shaping up to be another leadership desktop processor lineup, with an engineering sample clocking significant increases in gaming minimum framerates over the preceding 12th Gen Core i9-12900K "Alder Lake." Extreme Player, a tech-blogger on Chinese video streaming site Bilibili, posted a comprehensive gaming performance review of an i9-13900K engineering sample covering eight games across three resolutions, comparing it with a retail i9-12900KF. The games include CS:GO, Final Fantasy IX: Endwalker, PUBG, Forza Horizon 5, Far Cry 6, Red Dead Redemption 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and the synthetic benchmark 3DMark. Both processors were tested with a GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card, 32 GB of DDR5-6400 memory, and a 1.5 kW power supply.

The i9-13900K ES is shown posting performance leads ranging wildly between 1% to 2% in the graphics tests of 3DMark, but an incredible 36% to 38% gain in the CPU-intensive tests of the suite. This is explained not just by increased per-core performance of both the P-cores and E-cores, but also the addition of 8 more E-cores. Although the same "Gracemont" E-cores are used in "Raptor Lake," the L2 cache size per E-core cluster has been doubled in size. Horizon Zero Dawn sees -0.7% to 10.98% increase in frame rates. There are some anomalous 70% frame-rate increases in RDR2, discounting which, we still see a 2-9% increase. FC6 posts modest 2.4% increases. Forza Horizon 5, PUBG, Monster Hunter Rise, and FF IX, each report significant increases in minimum framerates, well above 20%.

Both Ghostwire Tokyo and DOOM Eternal support real-time ray tracing, and NVIDIA DLSS performance enhancement.

High End NVIDIA GPU Prices on a Slippery Slope as RTX 3090 Ti Hits $1599

It seems like NVIDIA wants the market to absorb inventories of its high-end GeForce RTX 30-series SKUs, such as the RTX 3090 Ti, so the company could make room for high-end SKUs from the RTX 40-series "Ada" series. Prices of the RTX 3090 Ti have tanked to as low as $1,599 for the Founders Edition, from its launch MSRP of $1,999. This $400 price-cut is probably triggered by crypto-currency miners flooding the market with high-end RTX 30-series graphics cards at attractive prices, which gamers are all too happy to lap up. The crash in demand from miners, compounded by drop in demand from gamers buying up cards in circulation, has forced NVIDIA to renegotiate its semiconductor foundry allocation with TSMC in the short-term.
